
Kindergarten through Sixth Grade 8:30AM – 3:00PM
The Elementary classes are Montessori and traditional based programs. The class encourages the development of independence and self-motivation and skills to enhance their individual abilities and talents.
The full day length of Kindergarten allows students to establish and refine their academic skills in reading and comprehension, writing, critical thinking, and mathematics. Homework is introduced as a way of reinforcing continuity between home and school while obtaining good study habits. Developing writing skills and the sense of completing projects is a focus for this group.
Kindergarteners in this class are 5 years by December 2 and/or have had experience in a Montessori environment or teacher recommendation prior to enrollment.
The Day in Elementary
There are small group lessons in reading and math takes place in the mornings while other children are working independently on journaling, handwriting, computer and other learning activities. A strong emphasis is placed on creative writing and expression with Writer’s Workshop. This writing program facilitates children to expand their writing abilities in various directions, from story writing to comic strips, reports and essays, different forms of letter writing and journaling. In the 3-6 grades there is more focus placed on the development each student’s full potential in language arts and math skills.
In the afternoon, the focus shifts to more enrichment studies and projects. There are cultural study presentations in Science, Geography, Astronomy, History, Zoology, Botany, or Biology and specific follow-up activities and journal writing. Resource programs such as Spanish and Physical Education are also taught in the afternoon. Librarians assist the children in their development of research skills with the use of reference books, periodicals, encyclopedias and other library resources. Children in the elementary grades are required to complete supervised science projects that are judged.
Students learn:
- How to gather information for research reports.
- Analyze and problem solve for investigative reporting.
- Cooperation and teamwork while in groups on class projects.
- Problem solving and critical thinking skills in science and cultural studies.
Field trips are integrated as an extension of a focused study unit. The children in the 2-6 grades take fieldtrips once a month.
